Ann Arbor construction and utility closures

When: 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3 – 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025

Why: The private development at 310 East Huron Street will be utilizing this lane to install public sidewalk on the south side of East Huron Street.

Detour or other travel impacts: 

  • Eastbound East Huron Street will be reduced to one lane. Drivers should expect significant delays.
  • Pedestrian access will continue to be detoured to the north side of East Huron Street.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

Why: City Contractor, SAK Construction, will be preparing for utility work

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • All westbound Miller Avenue vehicle traffic will be detoured by traveling south on North Ashley Street, then west on West Ann Street, then south on North First Street, then follow the existing Miller Avenue detour.
  • All eastbound Miller Avenue vehicle traffic will be detoured by following the existing Miller Avenue detour traveling East on Huron Street, then north on North First Street, then east on West Ann Street, and north on North Ashley Street.
  • Westbound Miller Avenue pedestrian and bike traffic will be detoured by traveling north at North Ashley Street, then west on Miller Aveune, and west across North First Street.
  • Northbound First Street pedestrian and bike traffic will be detoured by traveling west across North First Street at Ann Street, then north on North First Street.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: Ferndale Electric will be closing North Fifth Avenue to set up a crane for replacements of solar panels.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Southbound vehicles traveling on North Fifth Avenue will be detoured west on East Ann Street, south on North Fourth Avenue, east on East Huron Street, and back to South Fifth Avenue.
  • Sidewalk traffic on the west side of North Fifth Avenue will be detoured to the east side of the road.

Why: The private development at 310 East Huron Street will be utilizing this lane to install siding.

Detour or other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound East Huron Street will be reduced to one lane. Drivers should expect significant delays.
  • Pedestrian access will continue to be detoured to the north side of East Huron Street.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

Why: City contractor Fonson will be installing the cycle track, speed tables, and enhanced crosswalks.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on Miller Avenue will be detoured south on North Maple Road, then east on Dexter Avenue to east on West Huron Street, then north on North First Street to Miller Avenue.
  • Westbound vehicles will be detoured south on North First Street, then west on West Huron Street, then west on Dexter Avenue, then north on North Maple Road to Miller Avenue.
  • Cyclists are advised to travel to and from downtown Ann Arbor via Dexter Avenue, South Revena Blvd, and West Washington Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk replacement work.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour, when possible. However, emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: City Contractor Fonson will be installing underground watermain.

  • All northbound vehicles will be detoured west on West Liberty Street, then north on Wagner Road, and east on Jackson Road.
  • All southbound vehicles will be detoured by traveling west on Jackson Road, then south on Wagner Road and then east on West Liberty Street.
  • Pedestrian access is unaffected.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

  • All southbound vehicles will be detoured east on Bydding Road, then south on Minor Street, and west on West Summit Street.
  • Northbound vehicles and pedestrian access will be unaffected.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: Ann Arbor Railroad will be closing East Madison Street to rebuild the road track structure and crossing surface.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on West Madison Street will be detoured north on South Main Street, east on Packard Street, south on South Fourth Street, and back to East Madison Street.
  • Westbound vehicles traveling on East Madison Street will be detoured north on South Fourth Street, west on Packard Street, south on South Main Street, and back to West Madison Street.
  • Sidewalk traffic will follow the vehicle detour.

Why: East Edge Excavating will be constructing new utility leads in Packard Street to support the construction of a new building.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Packard Street vehicles will be detoured west on East Stadium Blvd then south on South Industrial Highway then west on Stimson Street then north on South State Street back to Packard Street.
  • Southbound Packard Street vehicles will be detoured south on South State Street then east on Stimson Street then north on South Industrial Highway then east on East Stadium Boulevard back to Packard Street.
  • Northbound Packard Street bicycles will be detoured west on Granger Avenue then north on South State Street back to Packard Street.
  • Southbound Packard Street bicycles will be detoured south on South State Street then east on Granger Avenue back to Packard Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the north side of Packard Street.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.

When: 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22 – 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2025

Why: The contractor, Cadillac Asphalt, and its subcontractors, will be performing road construction, including partial-depth removal of the existing asphalt pavement; isolated areas of base repairs; minor concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, and curb ramp removal and replacement; and repaving of the roadway.

Southbound South Seventh Street is closed to vehicle traffic between West Huron Street and West Madison Street.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • East on West Huron Street
  • South on South Ashley Street
  • East on West William Street
  • South on South Main Street
  • West on West Madison Street to South Seventh Street
  • Northbound traffic will be maintained.

North Seventh Street is closed to vehicle traffic in both directions between West Huron Street and Miller Avenue

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • West Huron Street
  • Dexter Avenue
  • North Maple Road
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk and ramp replacement work.
  • Bicycle traffic will be detoured around the work zone using Princeton Avenue, Fifth Street, West Liberty Street, Eighth Street, West Huron Street, Arbana Drive, and Arborview Boulevard.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour when possible. However, emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.
  • Access to driveways within the closure areas will be maintained.

Why: Granger Construction will be occupying two lanes of South Huron Parkway to install utilities for the new Fire Station.

Travel impacts:

  • Southbound South Huron Parkway traffic will have one lane closed.
  • No impact to northbound traffic.
  • Access to driveways within the lane closures will be maintained.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be maintained on the west side of South Huron Parkway.

  • All northbound vehicle and bicycle traffic will be detoured by traveling west on East Eisenhower Parkway, then north on South State Street, and east on Stimson Street.
  • Only southbound traffic will be maintained on South Industrial. Pedestrian access will be unaffected.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: Closed for ongoing work associated with the State Street Watermain and Resurfacing Project

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Vehicles traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Hill Street to South Forest Avenue to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to Geddes Road to North University Avenue.
  • Vehicles traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of North University to Geddes Road to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to South Forest Avenue to Hill Street.
  • Cyclists traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Packard Road to South Division Street to East William Street.
  • Cyclists traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of East William Street to South Division Street to Packard Road.
  • Pedestrians should follow posted detour routes due to sidewalk closures along State Street.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2025 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 1, 2027

Why: The private development at 711 Church Street will require a lane closure of the northbound traffic lane of Church Street to construct their new apartment building. 

Detours and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Church Street traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, north onto East University Avenue, ease onto Willard Street, and then north back to Church Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of Church Street.

When: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday, April. 8– Friday, Nov. 21, 2025

Why: The University of Michigan’s South Fifth Housing and Dining project will be installing utility service leads and water main in South Division Street. After utility installation, South Division Street will be repaved. 

Detours and other travel impacts

  • Southbound traffic on South Division Street will be detoured east onto Hill Street, southeast onto Packard Street, south onto State Street, and back west onto East Hoover Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic on South Division Street will be detoured east onto East Hoover Avenue, north onto State Street, northwest onto Packard Street, west onto Hill Street, and north back to South Division Street.
  • Westbound traffic on Benjamin Street will be detoured north on Sybil Street, west on Hill Street, and back north on South Division Street.
  • Benjamin Street between South Division Street and Sybil Street will remain accessible to local traffic only.
  • Northbound cycle traffic on South Division Street will be detoured west on East Hoover Avenue, north on Greene Street, east on Hill Street, and north back to South Division Street.
  • Southbound cycle traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, south on Greene Street, and east back to Hoover Street.
  • Southbound pedestrian traffic on South Division Street will be detoured south on the sidewalk on the east side of Division Street, east on the sidewalk on the north side of Benjamin Street, south across the western crosswalk crossing Benjamin Street at Sybil Street, west on the sidewalk on the south side of Benjamin Street, and back south on the sidewalk on the east side of South Division Street.
  • Northbound pedestrian traffic on South Division Street will be detoured north on the sidewalk on the east side of Division Street, east on the sidewalk on the south side of Benjamin Street, north across the western crosswalk crossing Benjamin Street at Sybil Street, west on the sidewalk on the north side of Benjamin Street, and back north on the sidewalk on the east side of South Division Street.

Special Event Closures

(Unless otherwise noted, special events listed are not sponsored or endorsed by the City of Ann Arbor.)​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

These closures will occur for all U-M home football games, beginning with the home opener Saturday, ​Aug.​ 30. The scheduled closures are the same as those during the past several football seasons:

  • East Keech Street between South Main Street and Greene
  • Closure of the westbound right turn lane of East Stadium Boulevard onto South Main Street just south of Michigan Stadium
  • Closing South Main Street to both local and through traffic from Stadium Boulevard to Pauline
  • Limited access to parking permit holders on Greene Street from East Hoover to Keech

The duration of these closures will be three hours prior to each game until the end of each game. The exception is southbound South Main Street, which will be closed one hour prior to the games until the end of each game. See a map of these closures (PDF). Please also note that the road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect for the major concert event (Zach Bryan) scheduled to take place at Michigan Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 27.
