City of Ann Arbor Closures

When: 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2025

Why: P.K. Contracting will be placing pavement markings as part of the Resurfacing Program

Detour or other travel impacts:

  • Flagging operations will be utilized to maintain one lane of traffic on South Fifth Avenue.
  • The left turn lane from South Fifth Avenue at East William Street will be closed.
  • Traffic will be required to turn right from South Fifth Avenue at East William Street and follow the existing detour.
  • East William Street from South Fifth Avenue to South Division Street will be closed, however driveway and parking lot access will be maintained.
  • Eastbound lane of East William Street will be closed at South Fourth Avenue, however driveway and parking lot access will be maintained.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

 Why: Water main construction at the intersection of Pauline Boulevard and South Seventh Street

Detour route and other travel impacts: 

  • Vehicles traveling Southbound on South Seventh Street will turn right onto West Liberty Street continue west on West Liberty Street to Stadium, then detour south on Stadium, to South Seventh Street.
  • Northbound vehicles traveling on South Seventh Street will turn left on Stadium continue north on Stadium, then detour east on West Liberty Street, to South Seventh Street.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour, however, access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

For the safety of all, please reduce speeds and drive cautiously through or around the area. The city thanks all in advance for their patience.

  • Southbound vehicles traveling on Stadium Boulevard will continue south on Stadium Boulevard then west on West Liberty Street to South Maple Road.
  • Northbound vehicles will be detoured east on West Liberty Street to north on Stadium Boulevard.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: Doan Construction Co. will begin performing pavement removal and installing three median islands.

Detour or other travel impacts:

  • Contractor staff with flags will be controlling traffic during construction to maintain two-way traffic.
  • The bike lane will be closed so “Share the Road” signs will be put in place.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

Why: This closure will accommodate the installation of roundabouts, pavement removal and replacement, public utility work, associated sidewalk, sidewalk ramp and crosswalk improvements.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound vehicles traveling on Nixon Road will be detoured east on Plymouth Road, then north on Green Road to Nixon Road.
  • Southbound vehicles traveling on Nixon Road will be detoured east on Green Road, then west on Plymouth Road to Nixon Road.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour, however, access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, June 2–5 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2025

Why: Corby Energy Services, on behalf of Verizon, will be closing South Division Street for conduit work.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Access to driveways will be maintained.
  • Eastbound vehicles and cyclists traveling on Hill Street will continue east on Hill Street, then detour north on South State Street, west on East Madison Street, north on Thompson Street, west on East Jefferson Street, and back to South Division Street.
  • Westbound vehicles traveling on Hil Street will be detoured north on Packard Street to South Division Street. Southbound cyclists traveling on South Division Street will be detoured south on Packard Street, and west on Hill Street.
  • Sidewalks will not be affected.

When: 9 a.m. Monday, April 28–3 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2025

Why: Doan Construction Co. will begin performing pavement removal and installing new ramps and median islands, followed by city forces who will install rectangular rapid flashing beacons.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Intermittent lane closures will be in place while work is occurring on Jackson Avenue between Maple Road and East Huron Street, and East Huron Street between Revena Boulevard and Seventh Street. Flagging operations will be used as needed.
  • The bike lane will be impacted to accommodate so “share the road” signs will be in place.

When: Miller Road includes Closure of Newport Road Intersection, 7 a.m. Monday, April 28–8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2025

Full Closure of Miller Avenue, Newport Road through Seventh Street, March 24–July 7, 2025

Why: Fonson Company will be installing water main, stormwater drains, road curbs and pavement for the Miller Avenue Rehabilitation project.

Detours and other traffic impacts:

  • Newport Road can be accessed via North Maple Road, Bird Road, or Sunset Road.
  • All lanes of Miller Avenue will be closed to traffic from Newport Road through and including Seventh Street.
  • Eastbound traffic will travel south on North Maple Road, then east on Dexter Avenue, then east on West Huron Street, then north on North First Street back to Miller.
  • Westbound traffic will travel south on North First Street, then west on West Huron Street, then west on Dexter Avenue, then north on North Maple Road back to Miller.

The following intersections with Miller Avenue will also be closed:

  • Linda Vista Street
  • Wesley Street
  • Pomona Road
  • Red Oak Road
  • Arborview Boulevard
  • Seventh Street

Cyclists who normally use Miller Avenue are advised to travel to and from downtown Ann Arbor via Dexter Avenue, South Revena Boulevard and West Washington Street. 

Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk replacement work.

 

When: 7 a.m. Friday, May 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2025

Why: This closure will allow pavement removal and replacement, utility work, associated sidewalk, sidewalk ramp and crosswalk improvements.

Detour and other travel impacts:

  • State Street will be closed to traffic in both directions north of South University Avenue and south of East William Street.
  • Prior to the Ann Arbor Art Fair, the intersection of South University and State Street, and North University Avenue between State Street and Thayer Street will be closed for a set duration to accommodate water main installation. A separate notification will be issued to inform the public of the new traffic pattern that will take place at that time.

During construction, traffic will be restricted to emergency vehicles, refuse pickup and mail delivery.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Vehicles traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Hill Street to South Forest Avenue to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to Geddes Road to North University Avenue. 
  • Vehicles traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of North University to Geddes Road to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to South Forest Avenue to Hill Street.
  • Cyclists traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Packard Road to South Division Street to East William Street. Cyclists traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of East William Street to South Division Street to Packard Road.
  • Pedestrians should follow the posted detour routes when sidewalks are closed to use.
  • Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

A second phase of construction will begin July 21, after the Ann Arbor Art Fair concludes. A separate notification will be issued to inform the public of the new traffic pattern that will take place at that time.

 

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2025 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 1, 2027

Why: The private development at 711 Church Street will require a lane closure of the northbound traffic lane of Church Street to construct their new apartment building. 

Detours and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Church Street traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, north onto East University Avenue, ease onto Willard Street, and then north back to Church Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of Church Street.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, April 14–7 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2025

Why: Bailey Excavating will require a closure for underground utility work on South Fifth Avenue between East Jefferson Street and Packard Street. Cadillac Asphalt will be milling and paving once utility work is completed. 

Detour and other travel impacts:

Vehicles

  • Southbound vehicles on South Fifth Avenue will be detoured west onto East William Street, south onto South Fourth Avenue and east onto Packard Street.
  • Southbound vehicles on South Fifth Avenue will be detoured west onto East William Street, south onto South Fourth Avenue and east onto West Madison Street. 

Cyclists

  • Southbound cycle traffic on South Fifth Avenue will be detoured east onto East William Street, south onto South Division Street and west onto East Madison Street. 

Pedestrians

  • Northbound crosswalk on South Fifth Avenue at Packard Street will be closed.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be detoured south at Packard Street and South Fifth Avenue intersection, and down the south crosswalk on South Fifth Avenue at Packard Street intersection, and up the north crosswalk on Packard Street at South Fifth Avenue intersection.

When: 7 a.m. Wednesday, April 9–End of July 2025

Why: Dan’s Excavating Inc. will be installing a new water main and replacing the pavement between Seventh Street to Main Street. No impact is anticipated at the intersection at Main Street and Pauline Boulevard.

Detour and other travel impacts:

  • Westbound traffic from Main Street will be detoured south to West Stadium Boulevard, west on West Stadium Boulevard to South Seventh Street and north on South Seventh Street to Pauline Boulevard. 
  • Eastbound traffic will be detoured south on South Seventh Street to West Stadium east on West Stadium to South Main Street, north on South Main Street to Pauline Boulevard.
  • During construction, pedestrian traffic will be maintained.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, April 14–7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2025

Why: The University of Michigan’s South Fifth Housing and Dining project will be installing utility service leads and water main in South Division Street. 

Detour and other travel impacts:

All forms of travel will be impacted by the full closure of South Division Street.

Vehicles:

  • Southbound traffic on South Division Street will be detoured east onto Hill Street, southeast onto Packard Street, south onto State Street, and back west onto East Hoover Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic on South Division Street will be detoured east onto East Hoover Avenue, north onto State Street, northwest onto Packard Street, west onto Hill Street, and north back to South Division Street.
  • Westbound traffic on Benjamin Street will be detoured north on Sybil Street, west on Hill Street, and back north on South Division Street.
  • Benjamin Street between South Division Street and Sybil Street will remain accessible to local traffic only. 

Cyclists:

  • Northbound cycle traffic on South Division Street will be detoured west on East Hoover Avenue, north on Greene Street, east on Hill Street, and north back to South Division Street.
  • Southbound cycle traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, south on Greene Street, and east back to Hoover Street. 

Pedestrians:

  • Southbound pedestrian traffic on South Division Street will be detoured south on the sidewalk on the east side of Division Street, east on the sidewalk on the north side of Benjamin Street, south across the western crosswalk crossing Benjamin Street at Sybil Street, west on the sidewalk on the south side of Benjamin Street, and back south on the sidewalk on the east side of South Division Street.
  • Northbound pedestrian traffic on South Division Street will be detoured north on the sidewalk on the east side of Division Street, east on the sidewalk on the south side of Benjamin Street, north across the western crosswalk crossing Benjamin Street at Sybil Street, west on the sidewalk on the north side of Benjamin Street, and back north on the sidewalk on the east side of South Division Street.

When: 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8–3 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2025

Why: The contractor, C.A. Hull, will be replacing the deck, relocating utilities and many other improvements to the substructure to rehabilitate and widen the bridge on the east side of the bridge.

Detour and other travel impacts:

  • The two vehicle lanes currently open will be shifted from the west to the east side of East Medical Center Drive bridge, from West Medical Center Drive to Fuller Road/Maiden Lane.
  • Southbound East Medical Center Drive traffic will be switched on Saturday and northbound traffic will be switched Tuesday to allow crews to adjust barrier walls.
  • One vehicle lane in each direction on the bridge will remain open throughout project duration; one vehicle lane in each direction on the bridge will always remain open throughout the project duration.

The following restrictions remain from Phase 2:

  • No northbound East Medical Center Drive left turn will be allowed onto westbound Fuller Road.
  • No southbound Maiden Lane left turns will be allowed onto eastbound Fuller Road.
  • The sidewalk on the east side of the road will be closed and pedestrians will be detoured to the west sidewalk on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The following detours will remain in place:

  • Fuller Road - No northbound East Medical Center Drive left turn will be allowed onto westbound Fuller Road. Detour: Turn right along eastbound Fuller Road, then use the two Fuller Road left-turn lanes across from Fuller Park Pool.
  • Maiden Lane - No southbound Maiden Lane left turns will be allowed onto eastbound Fuller Road. North on Maiden Lane, east on Plymouth Road, south on Murfin Avenue and south on Bonisteel back to Fuller Road.

A separate notification will be issued for a new traffic pattern during the next phase of the project. 

When: 5 p.m. Friday, June 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2025

Why:The AC Hotel private development at 310 E. Huron St. will require a long-term lane closure of the easternmost southbound traffic lane of South Fifth Avenue to construct the hotel building. 

Detour and other traffic impacts:

  • South Fifth Avenue between East Huron Street and East Washington Street will be reduced to one lane to make space for continued hotel construction. ​
  • Non-vehicle traffic will be maintained on the west side of South Fifth Avenue. ​

Special Event Closures

(Unless otherwise noted, special events listed are not sponsored or endorsed by the City of Ann Arbor.)​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Thursdays at 4 p.m. through Mondays at 6 a.m. from June 1 through Sept. 30, 2025, the following streets will be closed as part of the downtown closures for restaurant and retail use (PDF):

  • Main Street from William to Washington;
  • West Liberty Street from Ashley to Main;
  • East Liberty Street from Main to Fourth; and
  • West Washington Street from Ashley to Main (no 24/7 closure).

Between Friday, June 7 and Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the following street will be closed for the Top of the Park special event:

  • East Washington Street between Fletcher Street and Thayer Street (24-hours a day/7-day a week closure)

On Thursday's, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., between June 5 and August 28, the following street will be clsoed for the Sonic Lunch Performance special events:

  • East Liberty between South Division and South Fifth Avenue

From 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6 until 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2025, the following street will be closed for the African-American Downtown Festival special event: 

  • East Ann Street from North Main Street to North Fifth Avenue with local traffic access maintained
  • North Fourth Avenue from Catherine Street to East Huron Street 

From 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 until 6 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2025, the following street will be closed for the University of 
Michigan Health System’s Office of Medical Development's Event on Main special event:

  • South Main Street between William Street and Liberty Street
